Playing Fields
The Lane End Playing Fields, which are owned by the Parish Council, are located along “The Row” and are accessed by a track running across Handleton Common. The Playing Fields are the biggest amenity that is available in the village and offer a facility that is available for all to use.
During the course of 2017, the Parish Council has made a significant investment in upgrading the facilities that are available and it is hoped that further improvements will continue to be made over the course of the next few years. A major part of this investment has gone towards a major refurbishment of the Clubhouse, which has dramatically improved the appearance externally as well as refurbishing the interior. The bar and social area have been upgraded and the changing rooms and showers completely renovated. It now offers a facility that provides an attractive and welcoming atmosphere catering for those who simply want to enjoy a drink in a relaxed setting to those who want hire a facility for a private function.
In addition to the major work on the Clubhouse, a new 3G Floodlit 5-A-Side Football Pitch was also constructed in 2017 to replace the old Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). This facility has proved extremely popular and is extensively used on most evenings throughout the week. In the late summer of 2018, a major project to install new lighting to the whole of car park area was completed and the car park now benefits from environmentally friendly LED Lighting which operates at a fraction of the cost of traditional street lighting.
During the course of the summer of 2018, a major renovation of the main football pitch was also completed which has significantly improved the drainage and general condition of the playing surface. It is hoped that a similar renovation will now be undertaken of the other football pitch during the summer of 2019.
Future plans for the Playing Fields include the upgrading of facilities at the Clubhouse to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities. This is seen as a high priority but the physical layout of the building limits the extent of what can be achieved in the fairly immediate future and short term improvements are likely to be largely focused on improving the existing access arrangements.
In addition to improving facilities for people with disabilities, we have recently installed a new patio area which is located at the end of the Clubhouse, overlooking the football pitches. In the longer term, and when funds permit, it planned to build a new children’s Play Area but the costs of this will be significant and regrettably therefore this is unlikely to happen in the immediate future.
